And it came to pass that when my father had read and seen many great and marvelous things, he did exclaim many things unto the Lord; such as: Great and marvelous are thy works, O Lord God Almighty! Thy throne is high in the heavens, and thy power, and goodness, and mercy are over all the inhabitants of the earth; and, because thou art merciful, thou wilt not suffer those who come unto thee that they shall perish!1 Nephi 1:14
Lehi is introduced, along with his wife, as goodly parents. It’s obvious right away why. After hearing the prophets prophesy that Jerusalem would be destroyed, Lehi prayed with all his heart on behalf of his people.
Generally when we pray it’s to give thanks or ask for guidance. I can imagine that Lehi thanked God for sending prophets to warn the people, but also asked for revelation on what he ought to do for his family.
Our first example of fatherhood (and parenthood in general) through Lehi is to be prayerful. To be prayerful though we need to take a step back and recognize that faith preceded the prayer. Lehi must have already had a relationship with God at this point. He must have already developed that faith to know that his prayers would be answered.
We too must develop our relationship with God. When the time comes to ask for help we should be able to do so in confidence that Heavenly Father will guide us.
Easier said than done though. Many of us struggle to even say a prayer. How can I even begin to develop a relationship with God if I don’t feel worthy to speak with Him?
That relationship begins by recognizing one fact: God loves you.
Why else would God warn the people that they were on a certain path towards destruction? God could have just destroyed the place without warning for the people’s wickedness, but that is not His goal. He wants to help you, His hand is reaching out to you. Sometimes that hand is in the form of a prophet’s warning, other times it’s a whisper. God is merciful and will not allow those who come to Him to perish.
Build your relationship with Heavenly Father now by starting small in your prayers. Tell Him about yourself. Tell Him your fears, desires, and needs. Ask Him to help you build faith. Ask that He might help you learn more about Him.
And after this manner was the language of my father in the praising of his God; for his soul did rejoice, and his whole heart was filled, because of the things which he had seen, yea, which the Lord had shown unto him.1 Nephi 1:15
We all start somewhere. Right now you might feel tiny before God, but one day you will love to speak with Him through prayer. One day you will realize you’ve developed faith like Lehi’s. Your soul will rejoice, and your whole heart will be filled because you will know the power, goodness, and mercy of Heavenly Father.
[…] I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance.1 Nephi 1:20
Because of Lehi’s faith. God delivered his family from the wickedness and destruction of Jerusalem by leading them through the wilderness. Have faith, and so too will God show unto you His tender mercies, and make you mighty even unto the power of deliverance from your personal wilderness of afflictions.
