He believed my words

Reading Time: 3 minutes

And it came to pass that I, Nephi, being exceedingly young, nevertheless being large in stature, and also having great desires to know of the mysteries of God, wherefore, I did cry unto the Lord; and behold he did visit me, and did soften my heart that I did believe all the words which had been spoken by my father; wherefore, I did not rebel against him like unto my brothers.

1 Nephi 2:16

Young like Nephi, or elderly as Lehi, the Lord is there for us. Nephi sets the example that if we have the desire to know the mysteries of God that we should cry unto him. Even as Lehi cried unto the Lord for his people after hearing the prophets in Jerusalem.

And I spake unto Sam, making known unto him the things which the Lord had manifested unto me by his Holy Spirit. And it came to pass that he believed in my words.

1 Nephi 2:17

After Nephi’s heart was softened he then spoke to Sam, making known unto him the things which the Lord had manifested unto him. After Lehi prayed for guidance he was then told to preach to the people in Jerusalem. In a way, Nephi and Lehi set the same example to us: Having prayed and received revelation, we should then act upon it.

The other side of this is that when we learn about something that helped us, it ignites that fire within us to share that thing with others. Just as you or I, having this affliction, desire to share with others the dangers and hardships that come with it. We mean to warn, but also to inspire hope that change is possible.

And inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments, ye shall prosper, and shall be led to a land of promise; yea, even a land which I have prepared for you; yea, a land which is choice above all other lands.

1 Nephi 2:20

Just as we would depart from our personal Jerusalem, there is also our personal land of promise. Heavenly Father knows our potential and wants to guide us through the wilderness to a land which is choice above all other lands, that choice land is our best selves.

And inasmuch as thy brethren shall rebel against thee, they shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord.

1 Nephi 2:21

I know that sometimes I have felt like Nephi’s older brothers with that feeling of being cut off or distanced from the presence of the Lord. This is as much of a warning to Lamen and Lamuel as it is to us individually to keep the commandments of the Lord.

And inasmuch as thou shalt keep my commandments, thou shalt be made a ruler and a teacher over thy brethren.

1 Nephi 2:22

Generally when God gives us a commandment, He follows it up with a blessing for obedience, and a warning against disobedience.

23 For behold, in that day that they shall rebel against me, I will curse them even with a sore curse, and they shall have no power over thy seed except they shall rebel against me also.

24 And if it so be that they rebel against me, they shall be a scourge unto thy seed, to stir them up in the ways of remembrance.

1 Nephi 2:23-24

Even when we are on the wrong side God gives us reminders so that we may be stirred up in the ways of remembrance. Are you the scourge, or are you being scourged? Ask God to soften your heart, and when He does, be prepared to share your story with others about the miracle of the atonement of Jesus Christ. It may not be crowds of people like Lehi, but like Nephi speaking with Sam, it may be that one person who needed your help to feel the love and hope of our savior.
